Designers and engineers work side-by-side on innovations to make sure the product perfectly reflects its intended environment, depending on the place and the type of equipment used.

Design in Service to Sound

No aspect of design is without constraint: everything visible serves the acoustic environment; you either get rid of the rest or put it to use. The type of base, the shape of the enclosure, the positioning of internal components, the choice of materials, the internal volume of the loudspeaker, the exterior details; everything has to enhance the soundstage.

Miniaturisation is one of the challenges where design must also provide a solution: this may involve integrating speaker drivers into vehicles which have an increasing amount of on-board electronics, or integrating loudspeakers into confined environments which can often be demanding on the equipment.

Choosing the Right Materials

The choice of materials used for the speaker drivers and loudspeakers must above all adhere to the laws of physical acoustics. The choice of materials is also determined by the expected performance. An array of all kinds materials are required to make a loudspeaker: beryllium, titanium, aluminium and magnesium for the tweeters; foam, flax, aramid fibres, recycled carbon, Polyglass for speaker driver cones. High-density pressed wood with excellent damping properties is the ideal material for loudspeaker enclosures. And for the finishing touch, a veneer coating adds to the loudspeaker’s overall aesthetics.
